Materials & Technology

At ION, every material is chosen with a clear purpose. Whether it's warmth, flexibility, durability or comfort, each component must meet the demands of life on the water.

When developing new products, we carefully evaluate materials and technologies based on their performance, composition and intended use. The solutions below offer an insight into some of the materials currently used across selected ION products.

Wetsuits & Waterwear

Wetsuits

Limestone Neoprene

Selected ION wetsuits use foam based on limestone-derived raw materials rather than petroleum-derived raw materials. Designed for reliable warmth, flexibility and comfort across a wide range of conditions.

Eco Carbon Black

Carbon black, one of the key ingredients of neoprene, can now be pyrolyzed from scrap rubber tires. This significantly reduces energy consumption and cuts CO2 emission by 200g per wetsuit.

OYSTERSHELL POWDER

Biocalcium oxide powder made from processed oyster shells is used to partially replace limestone in selected ION wetsuit foam compounds.

Materials & Technology

AQUA-ALPHA™ TECHNOLOGY

ION wetsuits feature Aqua-α™ technology, a solvent-free, water-based adhesive used throughout the collection. Designed for wetsuit construction, it provides reliable bonding while supporting the flexibility and durability required for water sports. Aqua-α™ is used in all ION wetsuits.

Reycled Max_Flex

The pinnacle of our outside linings is now made from 100% recycled materials. In addition to its outstanding flexibility, it doesn't absorb water; instead, it disperses it through tiny channels. This enhances water evaporation and shortens drying time.

Rashguards & shorts

Recycled Polyester

Selected ION rashguards, shorts and waterwear styles feature fabrics made with recycled polyester. Depending on the product, these fabrics may contain post-consumer and/or pre-consumer recycled materials.

ION Natural Rubber Ocena
USDA-certified with 82% bio-based content.

Natural rubber

OCENA® rubber is made from FSC-certified natural rubber, oyster shell powder and plant-based oil. USDA-certified with 82% bio-based content, it combines flexibility, comfort and durability for demanding water sports. The natural rubber used in OCENA® is sourced from FSC-certified plantations, while oyster shell powder partially replaces mineral-based calcium carbonate in the rubber compound. Used in selected ION wetsuits and summer styles.
