ION Winter wetsuits

When winter hits and the crowds disappear, the real sessions begin. ION winter wetsuits are built to keep you warm, flexible, and ready for cold-water conditions — whether you’re surfing, winging, foiling, or kiteboarding. Each suit combines premium materials with thoughtful panel design, flexible linings, and reliable sealing, so you can stay comfortable even when the water temps drop.

Your ideal thickness depends on air temperature, water temperature, and how sensitive you are to the cold.

  • 5/4 mm: mild winter temps, higher mobility, shorter sessions

  • 6/5 mm: cold to very cold water

  • Hooded suits → maximum warmth in wind and long sessions

As a rule: the colder the water and the windier the spot, the thicker your winter wetsuit should be.
The overall warmth of a wetsuit is also determined by the type of thermo lining used on the inside and whether the seams feature additional sealing.

Select wetsuits

Fast-drying and maximum warmth through recycled thermo linings. Incredibly lightweight, durable, and heat-conducting Graphene_Plus 2.0 throughout the entire body, paired with highly flexible Hot_Stuff 3.0 in the shoulders and arms. The printed Exo_Shield on the chest and back shelters against wind chill.

Amp wetsuits

Quick-drying with exceptional stretch. The front features the highly flexible Hot_Stuff 2.0 thermal lining, while the back has plushy, fast-drying Plasma_Plush 2.0 for wind-chill protection.

Core wetsuits

Plush Hot_Stuff 3.0 throughout the torso and upper legs. Hot_Stuff 3.0 is our stretchiest inside lining and traps air through large loops.

Thermo linings are soft, plushy interior fabrics that sit on the inside of your wetsuit. They serve two main purposes: retain heat and improve comfort.
The looped fleece texture creates tiny air pockets that warm up with your body heat and act as insulation. High-end thermal linings (like Graphene_Plush) can also improve heat conductivity, spreading body heat more evenly to keep your core and limbs warm where it matters.

No — a 3 mm wetsuit is too thin for real winter conditions. A 3/2 mm suit is more suited for spring or fall. For winter riding, you should look at 5/4 mm minimum, and for truly cold regions, 6/5/4 mm or thicker.

ION wetsuits combine flexible materials, smart panel layouts, and powerful thermal linings designed for cold water. Choose from different levels to match your individual needs — from ultra-warm Select styles and highly stretchy Amp wetsuits with sealed seams to Core level wetsuits featuring natural rubber for balanced warmth and flexibility.

Yes — hooded wetsuits offer the highest level of warmth. The head loses a lot of heat, especially in wind and cold air.

  • Choose a hooded suit if you frequently ride in cold, windy conditions or spend long periods in the water.

  • Choose a suit without an attached hood if you prefer flexibility or want to mix and match with separate neoprene hoods.

  • Get out of your wet wetsuit as soon as possible

  • Use a warm poncho, changing coat, or windproof jacket

  • Put on dry layers immediately

  • Drink something warm (tea, soup)

  • Warm up hands and feet gradually — not with hot water

  • A heated car seat or hot water bottle works wonders for the drive home

Gentle warmth is safer and more comfortable than sudden heat.

To stay warm and safe, pair your wetsuit with:

These accessories significantly increase comfort in cold conditions.

  • Rinse with fresh water after every session

  • Dry in the shade, not in direct sunlight

  • Use a wide hanger to avoid stretching

  • Never wash with hot water or chemicals

Proper care keeps your wetsuit flexible, warm, and long-lasting. Check out our care instructions for more details.
